With the whisky boom looking unstoppable Scottish farmers have a great opportunity to ride the wave, provided their grain is top quality and firmly within technical specifications.
This was the message today from Richard Beattie of Crisp Malting Group and David Waite of Frontier Agriculture at a meeting held by RAGT Seeds.
"Whisky production is on a roll with demand growing exponentially in the emerging economies," David Waite explained. "We have seen new distilleries being commissioned, mothballed distilleries re-opened and existing distilleries running 24-7 without time for their usual seasonal shut downs."

Wheat varieties that suit all of Scotland's markets are limited to two varieties according to Frontier's David Waite. He says "the Group 3s Tuxedo and Invicta are the only two varieties to meet the requirements of the distillers, bioethanol producers and millers supplying the Scottish cake and biscuit markets, as well as being suitable for feed manufacturers."
